In December 2003, Daniel Nicholls, David Nicholl’s eldest son, was involved in a tragic accident whilst on gap year in Australia. Daniel dived into the sea at Bondi Beach unaware that sandbank lay beneath him. Daniel broke his neck, the accident left him a tetraplegic. On his return to the UK, Daniel received treatment in Stoke Mandeville’s spinal unit. He was discharged from the hospital in mid 2005, to undergo rehabilitation and rebuild his life. David is very proud of Daniel and the bravery he has shown in coming to terms with this very cruel turn of events. David organised the publication of a book, ‘Off Duty’, where 48 of the world’s top chefs were interviewed giving the reader a closer insight into their personal worlds, and contributing a few of their favourite recipes. It was a wonderful achievement that David had the book published in time for Christmas 2005. All proceeds from the sale of “Off Duty” go to, The Nicholls Spinal Injury Foundation, a charitable trust for spinal and stem cell research and development and patient rehabilitation. David and Daniel remain optimistic that medical research will find cures for spinal injuries, even as serious as those sustained by Daniel. To help promote Broad Stripe Butchers, David has kindly confirmed that we can offer the book for sale on the website at a reduced rate of £20. The difference between the full purchase and cost price will go directly to The Nicholls Spinal Injury Foundation. Thanks David. We have also teamed up with Paul Gayler who recently published a book called ‘Steak’. Paul has generously given his support to Broad Stripe Butchers and confirmed that we can offer “Steak” for sale (no pun intended!) and donate the difference between the cost and retail price to The Foundation. Thanks to Paul for a wonderful gesture. Get into the spirit of giving! Wouldn’t ‘Off Duty’ and ‘Steak’ make a wonderful present? Wouldn’t you feel good about the boost you would be giving to Spinal Research in the UK? Absolutely!! Indulge yourself. Indulge others. Support a worthy cause.
