None of our meat is intensively reared, and, when it comes to top-quality meat, there really is no place like home. From the Welsh valleys to the Scottish highlands, the Cornish coast to the Yorkshire moors, our trusted suppliers are breeding happy, healthy animals to the best of British standards.
It’s important to us to be able to support local farmers, but it’s equally important that we offer you consistently good quality meat every single time. Luckily for everyone, buying British means the best of both worlds. It’s cold here in the UK a lot of the time, and this means that animals bred outside develop a great-quality fat covering, protecting their meat and keeping it nice and juicy.
Our expert buyers have an eye for quality and know that the secret to great flavour is in the beautiful marbling that runs through the meat. All our beef and lamb comes with the Quality Standard Mark – your independent guarantee that you’re buying meat from farms where the animals are well fed, reared and looked after.
British meat means fresh meat too. It doesn’t have far to travel before it reaches your kitchen, so we don’t need to freeze it, and you won’t need to thaw it.
Casterbridge™ Beef – quality from start to finish.
Our brand of beef is called Casterbridge™ – you may have seen it advertised in some of the famous restaurants we supply. Why is it so good? Well, we believe great meat comes as a result of selective breeding, careful rearing and proper maturing – three reasons why Casterbridge beef tastes so good –
Michel Roux –“this beef was some of the finest I have ever tasted”
Working in partnership with a network of farms, we’ve established an award winning supply chain, meaning consistency as well as sustainability for our farmers. Using only British beef breeds such as Aberdeen Angus, South Devon and Hereford, each animal is selected to our high specifications, ensuring succulence from great marbling. Feeding a natural grain guarantees a consistency, and subsequent maturing on the bone for 21 to 28 days gives a distinctively traditional flavour.
All our lamb is British – depending upon the time of year, we usually source our lamb from the rolling hills of Cornwall & Devon or the mountains and valleys of Wales.
We select breeds such as Texel Cross and Charollais. This ensures that the final prepared cut will meet the high standards expected by the UK’s top restaurants.
Our pork is 100% British too, so the same high standard. In fact, regulations for British pig farmers are even tougher than in Europe, giving pigs more room to move and keeping a close check on their care throughout their lives.
Our chickens are 100% British and sourced only from genuinely free-range flocks.
They are reared in the paddocks and fields of Gloucestershire using traditional methods. They are fed upon natural ingredients free from antibiotics, giving our chickens their fuller flavour and natural texture.
We believe the Great British Breakfast should be made with great British produce – therefore all our sausages, bacon, black pudding, and other breakfast items have either been reared in the UK or produced by great British suppliers.
